FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Oral Hygiene

+ How often should I clean my teeth?

At least twice a day. The important thing is that each brushing session should take at least 2 minutes for people with braces to ensure that the teeth are properly cleaned.

+ Which toothpaste should I choose?

Any toothpaste containing fluoride is good for your teeth, whether it be stannous fluoride, sodium fluoride or mono fluoride phosphate. Colgate Total is recommended as a very good all round toothpaste. It contains triclosan, an antibacterial cleaning agent and gintrez, an agent which allows the triclosan to keep working in between brushings.

+ What type of toothbrush is best? Electric v Manual

Research supports the use of electric tooth brushes. Try the Oral B Professional Care 7500.

If your still using a manual brush then make sure it is one with soft bristles, as a hard brush can damage the teeth and gums.

+ How often should I renew my brush?

Every 3 months or sooner if the bristles begin to show wear, or after an illness such as a cold of flu. (Old broken down brushes can harbor bacteria)

+ Do braces require special cleaning?

Yes. Food debris may collect at the junction of the tooth and bracket and around the "O" rings used to hold the wire in place. These areas require special care.

+ Do I need to floss?

Yes. Dental floss is the most effective way to clean between the teeth where it is difficult for the bristles on a brush to penetrate.

+ Can I floss with braces?

Yes, but it is more difficult. You have to first thread the floss under the wire before it can be drawn down between the teeth.

+ What about mouthwashes?

An antibacterial mouth rinse used in between brushings will further to prevent the build up of plaque.
