John Muir is a specialist orthodontist and a member of:

> The New Zealand Association of Orthodontics.
> The New Zealand Dental Association.
> The Auckland Dental Association.
> The Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron.

After graduating with a B.D.S degree in 1971 from Otago University John undertook postgraduate study in orthodontics. A five year term as a lecturer in Orthodontics at Otago University preceded his joining Dr D. W. Hodgson in specialist orthodontic practise in Papatoetoe in 1985.
